25-HOUR FAST IN MEMORY OF THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE 1981 HUNGER STRIKE AT LONG KESH JAIL

The Irish Freedom Committee encourages our Members and supporters to participate in a 25-Hour Fast this Friday May 5, in memory of the 25th Anniversary of the 1981 Hunger Strike at Long Kesh jail.  Sponsor forms can be downloaded at the Chicago Hunger Strike Commemoration Committee website at http://www.wemustbeunited.com

On May 5, 1981 Bobby Sands died on hunger strike after 66 days without food. He was followed by nine heroic others, who sacrificed their lives that all Irish Republican Prisoners would have the right to Political Status --- the right to be classed as Political Prisoners, and not as criminals.  The Hunger Strikers’ demands for Political Status were won in blood, and all Irish Republican POWs thereafter shared these rights; until they were once again revoked under the terms of the 1998 Stormont Treaty.  Irish Republican Political Prisoners today are denied Political Status, and many are currently being held in conditions as bad or worse than those that preceded the 1981 Hunger Strikes.

Please join this 25-Hour Fast this Friday May 5, in memory of the sacrifices of so many.  All proceeds of this sponsored fast will go toward the support of dependants of Irish Republican Political Prisoners.  Sponsor forms can be downloaded at the Chicago Hunger Strike Commemoration Committee website at http://www.wemustbeunited.com

IFC 25-Hour Fast report
Saturday May 6, 2005

The Irish Freedom Committee would like to sincerely thank all of our
members and supporters nationwide who participated in yesterday's
25-Hour Fast, in memory of the ten hunger strikers who suffered and
died in Long Kesh jail 25 years ago. The fast was organized by the
Chicago Hunger Strike Commemoration Committee, as part of a series of
year-long events dedicated to the memory of the 1981 Hunger Strikers.

Some of our members chose to fast yesterday in private and solemn
reflection, and others collected sponsorships to be donated to today's
families of Republican political prisoners. Our sponsored fasts
educated our communities and co-workers on the deaths of Bobby Sands
and nine others, who would all suffer terrible deaths before the
British government would capitulate on their demands for POLITICAL
STATUS for all Irish Republican Political Prisoners. Sadly, 25 years
later those demands have once again been REVOKED under the terms of
another British treaty, and the fight goes on.

The Irish Freedom Committee will participate in several other upcoming
events as part of our year-long unity project with the Chicago Hunger
Strike Commemoration Committee; including an upcoming Punk Rock show
in July, and the 1981 Hunger Strike Commemoration Dinner Dance in
August. Please see the IFC website for more details or visit the
Chicago Hunger Strike Commemoration Committee website at
