On Saturday April 27, 2002, veteran republican Frank O'Neill was honored by many of his friends and associates from across the United States and in Ireland, at a surprise dinner held in his honor in Brookfield, Illinois. The event was kept a closely-guarded secret from the honoree in recognition of his well known resistance to any form of public attention or tribute. |
|
The event, hosted by Charlie Kerins Cumann, Irish Freedom Committee, was held at the cottage annexed to the Irish Times pub in Brookfield. While a crowd of friends and associates stood inside, the man of honor was led into the room by renowned bagpiper Ed Morley. The room quickly filled with people, overflowing at times to the patio outside. The dinner was attended by leading republicans from across the country, including from Boston, Rhode Island, Washington State; and throughout Chicago and its suburbs. Statements and solidarity greetings were sent to the event from friends and associates in Ireland and the United States, as well as from republican POWs at Portlaoise and Wheatfield prison. Many of these were included in the event's Testimonial Journal (a limited number of copies still available here). |
