The Irish Freedom Committee, Chicago Chapter, have staged weekly Political Status pickets since March 17 2005 in front of the British/Free State consulates on Chicago's busiest street, Michigan Avenue. Our pickets are being held to call attention to the worsening conditions for Irish Republican Political Prisoners and the 1998 revoking of Political Status, for which ten martyrs starved to death to achieve in 1981. Saturday April 2 - Day Of Action Today the IFC was joined by other independent activists in a broad front Day of Action on behalf of Irish Republican Political Prisoners. Due to ongoing publicity for our pickets at Chicago IndyMedia, a contingent of Chicago police officers was waiting for the IFC as we arrived for today's pickets. We consider this a sign that our pickets are successful and our message is being noticed!! We proceeded with our peaceful pickets and as we do every week, we got out the message about the continuing struggle on the inside and the loss of Political Status, the right 10 men died for in 1981. |

Saturday March 19 Federal Court Order!! NO PICKET OR PROTEST ALLOWED on Michigan Ave. today due to massive March 19th antiwar protests!! SO MUCH FOR FREE SPEECH! The IFC was turned away today and threatened with arrest if we proceeded on to Michigan Ave. to our picket destination the British consulate. Chicago Police Officers read our banner message over police radio meaning that every Chicago Police Officer on duty today heard the message RESTORE POLITICAL STATUS TO IRISH REPUBLICAN POWs. We'll be back next week at the British consulate! |
