Man In Court Accused Of Assault On Republican

2004-01-28 14:10:04+00

A man was remanded in custody today charged with assaulting a
leading dissident republican at his home six years ago.

Hugh Sheerin, aged 37, of Marlborough Road, Derry, was charged with
committing grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of a gun
or imitation gun when he appeared at Derry Magistrates Court.

He was also charged with entering as a trespasser with intent to
commit GBH, possessing firearms or imitation firearms, iron bars,
baseball bats and CS gas spray.

The charges relate to an attack on a leading member of Republican
Sinn Féin, Michael Donnelly at his home in Messines Park, in June
28, 1998.

Mr Donnelly, chairman of the Ulster Executive of the organisation
which has close links with the Continuity IRA, suffered a broken
leg and fractures to his hand in the attack.

For months leading up to the incident, he had been campaigning
against the Good Friday Agreement and the setting up of a power
sharing executive in Northern Ireland.

He will appear before the court on February 19.
