| PRESS RELEASE Irish Republican Writers Group Wednesday, February 07, 2001 8:19 PM IRWG CONDEMNS ATTACK ON ANTHONY MCINTYRE On the morning of Wednesday, 7 February, 2001, Anthony McIntyre of the Irish Republican Writers Group was physically attacked and injured by one of the leading participants in the recent Sinn Féin led pickets on his home. While leaving his house to walk to the cornershop for milk and a newspaper, a car pulled up and its occupant attacked and physically assaulted Anthony McIntyre. Before being restrained by witnesses to the attack, the assailant threatened Anthony McIntyre by saying "I'll put one in your head." The IRWG fully condemns the physical attack on Anthony McIntyre. We believe the attack comes as a direct result of the orchestrated climate of intimidation that has been created and call on all community leaders and political representatives to ensure that such attacks cease. Unfortunately, earlier appeals have gone unheeded. This climate of daily fear and tension was documented by the partner of Anthony McIntyre, Carrie Twomey, writing in the Irish News on the 26th of January 2001. She wrote: "Being put out of my home for 33 days, and spending four days in hospital due to the stress on my pregnancy, was hard to bear. Even though we are back in our house now, I still live with fear and tension. I am afraid to walk in certain areas of my neighbourhood. I do not like to leave the house anymore. I am afraid when my partner leaves the house: we are both prisoners after dark, kept inside for fear of attack should we meet the wrong people. My partner spent 18 years in prison for fighting the British. Now, when he is free, my fears for his safety still hold him captive; while I am reduced to being afraid of my neighbours. In many ways, the intimidation we have experienced at the hands of neighbours has made our lives unbearable. I only hope by the time my child is born things will have changed for the better." ENDS |
