Alert as bullets found in Maghaberry jail
------------------------------------------------------
Belfast Newsletter, May 23, 2002

A MAJOR search was under way at Maghaberry jail last night after the discovery of live ammunition in a prisoners’ dining room.
A clampdown was ordered after a bullet, which had been placed inside a toaster, exploded and a live round was then found.
Nobody was injured in the lunchtime incident but prison officers said it was a further step in the campaign to segregate loyalist and republican prisoners at the Co Antrim jail.

“It was to create a disturbance and to let us know that they have ammunition,’’ said an officer.

“It makes you wonder what else they’ve got but they’re pushing for segregation and I would put it down to that.’’

A Prison Service spokesman said that two rounds of ammunition were found in Bush House, which houses mainly loyalist prisoners.
He said: ‘‘The PSNI were notified and prisoners in both Bush and Roe houses have been confined to their cells while a full search took place.
“Arrangements for visits have been honoured.’’

The prison officer said that the incident would be used to strengthen calls to segregate prisoners.
“This was the way it happened in the Crumlin Road and the Maze.

“It’s only a matter of time before it’s introduced here, probably four to five months.’’

Republicans are to hold a public meeting on Sunday to discuss threats from the Loyalist Prisoners Reaction Force against prisoners in Maghaberry.
Republican Sinn Fein said last night: ‘‘The forced integration of republican and loyalist prisoners will see the death of a republican prisoner who are out-numbered on wings and landings by loyalists’’.

Last month, bullets and a hit-list – which named more than a dozen Catholic prisoners loyalist gunmen are plotting to kill – were sent to a governor at the jail.

Police believe the UDA posted the package to signal the start of a new terror campaign behind bars.

Subject: Supergrass witness had “chequered criminal past”
Date: 05 17 02

The Irish Freedom Committee ®
www.irishfreedomcommittee.net

Irish Independent

FBI agent had 'chequered criminal career'

FBI agent David Rupert was described by an American source as "a street
smart criminal who would anything for money", a defence lawyer for
alleged Real IRA leader Michael McKevitt told the Special Criminal Court
yesterday.

Mr Rupert, who worked for the FBI and British intelligence, is the chief
prosecution witness in the forthcoming trial of McKevitt who is the
first person charged in the Republic with directing terrorist activity.

McKevitt's counsel, Hugh Hartnett SC, said that according to documents
disclosed to the defence Mr Rupert has had a "very chequered criminal
career."

He said one document appeared to show Rupert falsely alleged Detective
Chief Superintendent (now Assistant Commissioner) Dermot Jennings had
not paid him money which was due to him. The document showed Rupert had
lied to Det Chief Supt Jennings and tried to cheat him.

This document signed by "Agent C" suggested Det Chief Supt Jennings had
expressed his personal opinion about Rupert in June 1999 and it was not
favourable.

Mr Hartnett also said other documents suggested Rupert was involved in
negotiations with the FBI over a £1m demand from the Internal Revenue
Service which was eventually settled for $25,000.

He said the defence was not aware of what money was or was not paid to
Rupert by gardai and required further discovery. He said the defence has
sought advice from American lawyers in relation to
Rupert's background.

Prosecuting counsel, Mr George Birmingham SC, said the State had
furnished the defence with new documentation provided by the British
authorities and as far as the State was aware the entirety of the
documentation from both the FBI and the British had now been given to
the defence.

Mr Birmingham said the State had concerns about the safety of Mr Rupert
who had successfully infiltrated the Real IRA leadership and was anxious
to go ahead with the trial. Mr Hartnett said the defence would not be in
a position to proceed with the trial on June 4.

Mr Justice Robert Barr, presiding, said it appeared unrealistic the
trial would go ahead then and he indicated a new date for trial would be
some time early next year.

Michael Mc Kevitt (51) of Beech Park, Blackrock, Dundalk, Co Louth, is
charged that between August 29, 1999, and March 28, 2001, within the
State, he was a member of an unlawful organisation styling itself the
Irish Republican Army and directed the activities of the same
organisation. He was remanded in continuing custody until May 29.

Subject: O'Loan Report on Rosemary Nelson Assassination to be Released
Date: 05 12 02

Sunday Herald
05 12 02
The murder of Rosemary Nelson provoked worldwide shock and outrage ...
three years later its secrets will finally be revealed
By Neil Mackay, Home Affairs Editor

THREE days after Rosemary Nelson was blown in half by a car bomb outside
her home in Lurgan, I sat down in a loyalist safe house on the Shankill
Road in Belfast with one of the men who had plotted her death.
The house was distinctly sinister. From the outside it looked
bricked-up, but inside it was like a Victorian jumble sale with chintz
and kitsch ornaments everywhere, and the cluttered rooms lit only by the
orange glow of 40-watt bulbs in frilly lampshades. At a table in the
living room, with a large bible bound in red leather by his right hand,
sat one of the men who, back in March 1999, conspired to kill Nelson, a
distinguished Northern Ireland defence lawyer. After years of
intimidation by RUC officers, who hated her for defending IRA suspects,
and endless death threats from loyalist terrorists, she was murdered by
the Red Hand Defenders -- an amalgam of dissident loyalists drawn mainly
from the Loyalist Volunteer Force and the Ulster Defence Association.
Security sources guess that a cell of around six men carried out
Nelson's murder. Most journalists who have covered Northern Ireland know
the names of her killers. Nearly every police officer in Northern
Ireland also has a good idea as to who was behind the bombing, and in
her home town even the dogs in the street -- as the Ulster saying goes
-- know who blew her to smithereens. But no-one has been convicted of
her murder. Why?

This week the public should have learned the contents of a highly
contentious report by Nuala O'Loan, the police ombudsman for Northern
Ireland, into the RUC's handling of the Nelson murder. Its publication
has been temporarily delayed by the human rights group the Committee for
the Administration of Justice (CAJ), which has won the right to a
judicial review and is seeking full disclosure of documents relating to
death threats made by loyalists against Nelson. The police ombudsman's
office is rumoured to be 'perfectly at ease' with the thought of losing
the case -- O'Loan favours full transparency, but has to abide by
current rules on confidentiality. The police, however, are preparing
themselves for yet another bruising at O'Loan's hands. The ombudsman is
already at daggers drawn with former RUC chief constable, Sir Ronnie
Flanagan, due to her savaging of the police over the handling of the
Omagh bomb inquiry.

Despite the publication delay, the Sunday Herald has been given a
detailed briefing on the contents of the report by sources very close to
O'Loan. When it is finally published -- probably within eight weeks --
it will make devastating reading for Sir Ronnie and the RUC. 'The
questions the report primarily asks are: did the RUC deal appropriately
with the threats against Rosemary Nelson and did they deal adequately
with her requests for protection? The answer to both these questions is
a resounding 'no',' the source said.

The implication is clear: while the RUC may not have actively colluded
in her death, they effectively allowed her to die at the hands of
terrorists. They allowed her to become a target. Despite the unpalatable
contents, the report will go some of the way towards helping the process
of 'truth and reconciliation'. The hope is that the facts can build
bridges to peace.

Nelson's assassination struck a deep chord in the Ulster psyche and
reverberated far beyond the province. Here was a woman who was murdered
for no reason, it seemed, other than her religion and the fact that she
was a lawyer. To nationalists, her death, with allegations that both
police and terrorists threatened her life, rekindled the spectre of
collusion between loyalists and the security forces. It caused
international outrage, with the US congress condemning the RUC and the
European parliament demanding an independent investigation into her
death.

Nelson's family and friends, most nationalists in Ireland, politicians
both at home and abroad and some of the most prestigious human rights
groups on earth believe that the killing of Rosemary Nelson is one
murder the police in Northern Ireland simply don't care about. Many
think the RUC are glad she's dead. That may be why calls for an
independent inquiry into her death are still ringing in the ears of the
government. It might also account for why so many eyewitnesses to her
death report police attending the murder scene laughing openly about her
death. One Scots squaddie was even supposed to have told 'jokes' to
drivers at a checkpoint that 'Rosie got done for drunk-driving because
she was legless'.

So why would the RUC deliberately fail to protect a lawyer from
assassination? To the police, Nelson's most vile act was winning the
appeal of Colin Duffy, a prominent republican from Lurgan, who had been
jailed for the murder of a soldier. She also represented Duffy when he
was charged with the murder of two RUC constables. Nelson was the lawyer
for the family of Robert Hamill, a young Catholic who was beaten to
death by a loyalist mob while RUC officers allegedly watched from the
comfort of a nearby Land Rover. On top of that, Nelson also represented
the Garvaghy Road Residents' Coaltion, a nationalist group set up to
prevent Drumcree Orangemen marching through Catholic areas.
Nelson became the victim of some terrible smears. I've heard her openly
referred to as an IRA intelligence officer, there have been rumours put
about that the happily married lawyer was having an affair with a
leading IRA man, and there were even claims that a facial disfigurement
she had was the result of a teenage bomb plot that backfired. All lies.
As Jane Winter, the director of British Irish Rights Watch (BIRW), said:
'The RUC seemed incapable of distinguishing between Rosemary and her
clients. It seems they thought that just because she represented people
in the IRA that she was in the IRA. It was an affront to the law and
democracy.'

When Nelson's clients were interrogated by the RUC, they would tell her
that police made death threats against her during the interviews. A
common threat was: 'We'll tell Billy Wright your solicitor's address.'
Wright was perhaps the most dangerous loyalist terrorist in Ulster until
his death.

The Pat Finucane Centre, an Irish human rights organisation, describes
the role of the RUC in Nelson's death this way: 'The trail which led to
her eventual death can be traced back to the demonisation of Rosemary by
the RUC. Once the finger was pointed, the deed was as good as done.
Though aware that the finger had been pointed, those with the
responsibility to provide protection failed to do so. If RUC detectives
believed her to be a 'provo solicitor' that was good enough. Within
extreme loyalism there was little need for further encouragement. Those
members of the RUC who pointed the finger of guilt by association
colluded in the process that eventually led to her death.'

The UN's special rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers,
Param Cumaraswamy, said in 1997, while Nelson was suffering this
intimidation, that 'the RUC had engaged in activities which constitute
intimidation, hindrance or improper interference' with lawyers. The
intimidation, he said, was 'consistent and systematic'. He later wrote
privately to the government expressing concern for Nelson's safety. In
July that year, Nelson was physically assaulted by RUC riot squad
officers on the Garvaghy Road. Before her death, she told the Lawyers'
Committee for Human Rights: 'One of them grabbed me by the arm and took
me right into the circle of riot shields and said, 'Rosemary, you Fenian
f***er,' and they threw me about a bit. I said, 'Can I have your number
please?' Somebody else said, 'F*** off' ... You couldn't see any numbers
and they were wearing balaclavas. I can't recall ever being so
frightened in my life.'

Six weeks before her death, she issued a writ against the RUC for that
assault. In June 1998, she received a handwritten death threat . Nelson
did not take the harassment and intimidation lying down. She allowed the
American Lawyers' Alliance for Justice to make a complaint on her behalf
to the Independent Commission on Police Complaints, and she testified
before the House Subcommittee on International Human Rights in
Washington about the campaign against her by the RUC.
According to Jane Winter of BIRW, the animosity against Nelson went
right to the very top of the RUC. When BIRW sent a report to Sir Ronnie
about the intimidation of Nelson, asking him to intervene to end the
harassment, he dismissed it with the reply: 'I suppose by now I really
should have learned to expect, and not be surprised by, the total
absence of balance in reports produced by your organisation.'

Three weeks before Nelson died, the Lawyers' Alliance again met with Sir
Ronnie expressing concerns for her safety. No action was taken. Days
before she died, she received two more death threats by telephone.
Not only did the RUC intimidate Nelson, it also blatantly refused to
offer her any protection from loyalist death threats. In August 1998,
the CAJ wrote to Northern Ireland minister Adam Ingram sending him a
copy of the handwritten death threat that Nelson had received. They also
enclosed a loyalist paramilitary pamphlet which referred to Nelson as
'Lurgan solicitor and former bomber' and quoted her address and phone
number. Jonathan Powell, Tony Blair's chief of staff, was informed and
said her safety was a matter of concern.

Ingram forwarded details of the threats to Sir Ronnie and assured the
CAJ that the RUC 'would obviously, given the nature of the material,
assess the security risk against Ms Nelson'. Despite government
insistence that Sir Ronnie was shown the death threat, an RUC press
release claimed: 'The RUC itself did not have any information to
substantiate a threat to Mrs Nelson's life before her murder.' Sir
Ronnie also claimed he had no knowledge of a request made to the Prime
Minister's office about her protection. In the minutes of the Police
Authority of Northern Ireland meeting of April 1999, it's recorded that
'the chief constable advised that ... the RUC did not have information
to suggest that she was the subject of a specific terrorist threat'.

Ingram's office also said that Nelson should apply for the Key Persons
Protection Scheme (KPPS) -- designed to safeguard anyone whose death
would 'seriously undermine the democratic framework of government' --
and that she should request a personal protection weapon. Nelson was
never placed on the KPPS and as a mother of young children had no desire
to have a gun in her home. The day she was murdered the then Ulster
secretary Mo Mowlam said police had conducted a security assessment of
the lawyer. Jane Winter later requested a copy of the assessment, but it
was never passed to her. 'I remain to be convinced that any assessment
was in fact carried out,' said Winter. 'Even if it was, it is now,
sadly, clear that it was completely wrong in its conclusions.'

The RUC seemed convinced that Nelson was something more sinister than
simply a clever defence lawyer. During a meeting in 1998 between Param
Cumaraswamy and senior RUC officers including Sir Ronnie, the police
claimed that some solicitors in Ulster 'may in fact be working for the
paramilitaries'. Sir Ronnie denies making this allegation. All this went
a long way to providing good foundation for Cumara swamy's claim to the
UN Commission that there was 'a complete indifference shown by the RUC'
to Nelson's safety.

Some 10 days after Nelson was murdered, two RUC officers called at the
CAJ offices asking for the originals of the threatening letter and the
pamphlet which described her as a bomber so they could have them
forensically tested. Winter says: 'Had they taken her situation
seriously, they would have taken these measures when the threats were
first delivered. It might have saved her life.'

In 1997, when the Independent Commission for Police Complaints ordered
an investigation into allegations that RUC officers had threatened and
abused Nelson, the police refused to accept the complaints as bona fide.
ICPC investigator Geralyn McNally said RUC officers she spoke to were
hostile, evasive and unwilling to co-operate with the investigation.
ICPC chairman Paul Donnelly said officers accused of threatening Nelson
declined to answer questions.

To Winter, the RUC are almost as much to blame for the lawyer's death as
the killers. 'If RUC officers were prepared to make threatening remarks
to Ro semary Nelson,' she said, 'they must have been even more ready to
say such things to loyalists. These constant attempts to associate her
with her clients' alleged crimes and causes undoubtedly put her life at
risk. There is no doubt in the minds of the human rights groups that
took up her complaints while Rosemary Nelson was alive that such abuse
helped to create the climate which brought about her death.'

Subject: Dublin Man Jailed Four Years for 'Membership', Stun Gun
Date: 05 09 02

Dubliner Robert Brennan was sentenced today in Ireland to four years for
Membership to a proscribed organization, and three years for possession
of a stun gun.

Under Irish law, a guilty sentence for Membership depends solely on the
single word of a senior police officer.

And while listed as a prohibited weapon in Britain, a stun gun is not
listed as restricted in Ireland. (Source: cybershooters.org)

Dubliner jailed for four years for Real IRA membership
09/05/2002 - 1:32:34 PM

A Dublin man was jailed for four years by the Special Criminal Court
today for membership of the Real IRA.

Robert Brennan, aged 33, of Sillogue Road, Ballymun, Dublin was found
guilty on Tuesday of membership of an illegal organisation styling
itself the Irish Republican Army, otherwise Oglaigh na hEireann,
otherwise the IRA on July 29 last year.

He was also convicted of the unlawful possession of a stun gun at the
Neptune Beach Hotel, Bettystown, Co Meath on the same date. He had
denied the charges.

The court heard during a two day trial that Brennan was one of four men
arrested after an operation by the Special Detective Unit and members of
the Crime and Security Branch directed against the Real IRA.

He was seen by detectives carrying a hold all bag into the Neptune Beach
Hotel.

When detectives raided a room in the hotel they found a stun gun in the
bag. Brennan and three other men were arrested during the garda
operation.

Detective Inspector Diarmuid O' Sullivan said that Brennan was a member
of the Real IRA since its formation by former members of the Provisional
IRA who left the organisation after an IRA Army Convention in Co Donegal
in 1997.

He said that Brennan's presence at the Neptune Beach Hotel was for the
purpose of ``enhancing the operation'' of the Real IRA.

Today Mr Justice Robert Barr, presiding, said:``The court has no doubt
that the so called Real IRA are intent on destroying by violent means
major political, economic and social progress which has been
painstakingly achieved in Northern Ireland.''

The judge said the court accepted that the Real IRA is a dissident group
of terrorists most of whom broke away from the Provisional IRA in 1997.

The Provisional IRA had supported the Good Friday Agreement which set up
new political and social structures in Northern Ireland and which had
been voted on and backed by referendums in Northern Ireland and the
Republic.

``The Real IRA are violently opposed to the will of the people of
Ireland so expressed and have sought to wreck the agreement by violent
means,'' the judge said.

"The court also accepted that the Real IRA had been involved in up to 80
paramilitary attacks involving firearms and explosives inside and
outside the State since October 1999."

The court jailed Brennan for four years for the membership charge and
gave him a concurrent three years sentence for possession of the stun
gun.

Subject: 'Slovakia 3' Sentenced 30 Years Each

5. MEN JAILED FOR REAL IRA ARMS OFFENCES
---------------------------------------------------------------
A London court has sentenced three men from County Louth to jail terms
of 30 years apiece for attempts to buy weapons and explosives on behalf of
the Real IRA.

Thirty-eight-year-old Fintan O'Farrell, from Carlingford, 42-year-old
Declan Raffertym also from Carlingford, and 44-year-old Michael
McDonald, from Dundalk, were sentenced at Woolwich Crown Court today.

The three men had been caught by British security service agents posing
as arms dealers from Iraq.

They received sentences of 30 years each for conspiracy to cause
explosions and twelve years each for charges under the Terrorism Act to run
concurrently.

A spokesperson for the 32-Counties Sovereignty Movement told RTÉ News
she was shocked by the length of the sentence, considering the three men had
changed their pleas to guilty just before the trial was due to start.

A large group of friends and relatives of the three men who had travelled
to England for today's hearing would not comment after the verdict.

Subject: Statement by Bernie McLaughlin
Date: 05 06 02

The following statement was issued yesterday at Maghaberry Gaol by
Bernie McLaughlin, the wife of Irish POW Ciaran McLaughlin.

The Irish Freedom Committee would also like to extend our very sincere
thanks to the dozens of our members and supporters who wrote in to the
Northern Ireland Prison Service, requesting an immediate compassionate
release for Ciaran McLaughlin. While the end result was too little, too
late on the part of the NIPS; we can remain certain that this pressure
by concerned human rights activists here in the United States had some
bearing on the prison service decision to grant Ciaran the opportunity
to briefly visit his dying two-year-old grandson.

Statement from Bernie Mc Laughlin, wife of Republican prisoner Ciaran Mc
Laughlin.
May 05 2002

I wish to take this opportunity to thank all those who campaigned on
behalf of my husband in his successful fight for compassionate parole.

The pressure applied by Republicans across the six counties, their
presence on the streets and the way in which Ciaran’s case was made
public both in the local and national press, ensured that the British
government became embarrassed enough to consider granting him a limited
form of compassionate parole.

As you know our grandson Kyle is suffering from a fatal condition and we
don’t know how long he will survive, as with all families it is
important to be close during these times of heartbreak and hardship.

Unfortunately my husband’s parole conditions did not even allow him to
cross the river Foyle to visit our family home in the eight short hours
he was out of those gates.

My husband is now serving his second jail sentence as a Republican
prisoner because of the continuing failure of British policy in Ireland.
He asks for no privileges from this foreign government but he demands
the right to compassionate parole for himself and his comrades.
Republican prisoners have a hundred per cent record of honouring their
conditions of parole and no POW would ever consider jeopardising another
comrade the chance, while incarcerated, to visit a sick or dying
relative. The British government and its prison service lackeys know
this, therefore any denial or delay in the granting of compassionate
parole can only be viewed as mental torture and punishment, not only for
the prisoner but also for his family who are treated by the state as
guilty by association.

We have nothing to thank the Government or the prison authorities for,
had not our family and its supporters persevered in their campaign then
Ciaran’s situation would have gone on being ignored. We only hope that
Ciaran’s case and his success, though limited, will serve as an example
to us all of our own strength and to the British of the futility of
their policy of abusing the rights of Republican prisoners and their
families.

We are stronger than them and WE SHALL OVERCOME.

Subject: Statement at Maghaberry Gaol
Date: 05 06 02

The powerful oratory below was delivered yesterday outside Maghaberry
Prison, where nearly two dozen Irish Republican POWs are now being
denied Political Status, and are being housed intermixed and very
greatly outnumbered amongst loyalist paramilitary prisoners.

The Irish Freedom Committee ®
www.irishfreedomcommittee.net
************************************************
Irish political prisoners' supporters statement at Maghaberry Gaol 5th May 2002:

" 21 Years ago today Bobby Sands from West Belfast died in the pursuit of
political status for Irish Republican prisoners of war. Within four
months, nine more young freedom fighters followed his example and died
for their beliefs and the welfare of their comrades.

" As a result of their sacrifice, incarcerated Republicans were treated in
a manner befitting Irish prisoners of war for nearly twenty years.

" The Hunger-strikers example served as an inspiration to oppressed
peoples and revolutionaries the world over. So inspirational were the
stories about the ten faces staring down from kitchen and living room
walls’ the country over, that a whole generation of children grew up
with the familiar faces of the H Block Martyrs etched into their minds.

" Today, some of those very children reside across that fence, now grown
men, captured in action or as a result of the continuing liberation
struggle being fought in our country. Others were freedom fighters even
then, enduring revolutionaries still organising, resisting and refusing
to be duped into the dead end road of Constitutional Nationalism. The
conditions in which they are now held and the establishments attempts to
break their resolve, confirms that their decision to reject the
reformist road was the right one. It was by that path that the rights,
won with the life-blood of the H Block martyrs, were voted down the
drain in the summer of 1998.

" Our men living beyond that fence are now treated not as political
prisoners nor as subversives but as common criminals. Our comrades,
friends and loved ones whose actions were motivated by a desire for
Irish Unity and Freedom are now forced to live amongst criminals, drug
pushers and child abusers. Our comrades are separated, isolated and
forced to endure a prison system that is designed to break down their
Republican identity and mindset. They live under constant threat and
intimidation from Loyalist inmates, men loyal to the system, which like
the state outside it serves, makes them the most powerful slaves in the
institution. This is all an attempt by the establishment to try to
criminalize not only the men themselves but the very Struggle they bear
allegiance to.

" As a result our prisoners are not only criminalized but also punished,
punished for not accepting the Good Friday Agreement, for not accepting
British Rule. Their families are punished also, intimidated and
humiliated by loyalist screws and their sniffer dogs, we all know the
story, we’ve all been there.

" Elsewhere today others are gathering to commemorate the H Block martyrs,
forgetting that the rights they died for have been abandoned with their
approval. The honourable place for republicans to be today is here with
us, in solidarity with the POWs, confronting the people who killed Bobby
Sands, NOT IN DUNVILLE PARK PRETENDING THIS IS NOT HAPPENING.

" To the British government and its prison service we say this, many of us
have confronted you before, through the seventies, eighties and nineties
and our resolve is stronger now than ever. Have you learned nothing? We
shouted our demands at you in the past and in time, but after much pain
you were forced to listen, surely you must realise the wise thing to do,
for we intend to shout and shout and the more you ignore us the louder
we will shout.

" Do not let history repeat itself, Restore Political status, Segregate
our prisoners. Save us all the PAIN."

Subject: Report on Mass Protest at Maghaberry
Date: 05 06 02

The Irish Freedom Committee ®
www.irishfreedomcommittee.net
************************************************
In a statement released to the media yesterday from Belfast, prisoners' rights activist Marian Price said;

" Today, at Maghaberry Gaol, over 150 people gathered to protest against
the inhumane treatment endured by the Republican prisoners incarcerated
there. There was a large RUC presence at the gaol but thankfully they
kept their distance allowing the protest to remain peaceful and
dignified. Speeches were read out on behalf of (a Belfast prisoners' rights organization) and from the family
of prisoner Ciaran Mc Laughlin, thanking people for their wonderful
support over these past months.

" The protest was colourful with placards and flags in
abundance. It was very good-natured even the prison fence assisted by
supporting banners. All present were very noisy---- air-horns, whistles
and rebel songs being blasted over a sound-system made sure that the men
inside were well aware of our presence outside.

" The event was a real morale boost for campaigners and
prisoners alike but the poignancy of standing there protesting once
again for Political Status, 21 years after 10 men gave their young lives
to establish it and on the anniversary to very day Vol. Bobby Sands died
was lost on no one present. "

Subject: Mass Picket at Maghaberry
Date: 05 04 02

A Belfast human rights organization will host another in a series
of mass pickets and protests tomorrow, Sunday May 5th; the anniversary
of Bobby Sand's death on hunger strike in 1981.

The announcement below is from Marian Price in Belfast.

The Irish Freedom Committee ®
www.irishfreedomcommittee.net
************************************************

" On 5th of May 2002, the 22nd Anniversary of the death on hunger strike
of Vol. Bobby Sands, (we) will be holding a mass picket at
Maghaberry Gaol. This is the culmination of a rolling programme of
pickets and protests we have been holding across the Six Counties in the
past months. Our aim is to highlight the plight of the Republican
prisoners held there and to demand the restoration of Political Status,
so dearly won in 1981. As a first step, and in light of recent attacks
and death threats from Loyalists, we call for the immediate Segregation
of Republican prisoners to a wing of their own. We call on all
Republicans to support these men and their just demands."

Marian Price

--------------------------

HMP MAGHABERRY - Update
04 30 02

1. Actual assaults and death threats – source – Loyalist Prisoners
Reaction Force

2. It is believed there are 3 sentenced anti-Stormont PoWs

3. There are 13 alleged “dissidents” on remand, awaiting trial

4. The chances of a unified campaign outside the prison are very slim,
as some groups, including the IA-PL and, according to the Andy’town
News, the RIRA, will have no truck with those who are prepared to
administer the new colonial arrangements set up through the GFA. The
IA-PL, for example, argue that the Brits, police, screws and Stormont
politicians now have a common paymaster, and all are part and parcel of
the very system that the PoWs have opposed. All the aforementioned, it
is argued, have a common and vested interest in attempting to
criminalise all anti-Stormont prisoners, in a collective bid to
legitimize the “new” colonial status quo. It looks as if each group, as
they say, will be doing their own thing to support the PoW cause.

5. The current Brit policy of enforced integration, in spite of the fact
that this endangers the lives of isolated and greatly outnumbered
republicans, is a willful strategy to wear down, not only the prisoners
themselves, but their families, friends and supporters on the outside.
“Mixing” prisoners, who are sworn enemies on the outside, is by no means
accidentally or unwittingly implemented. Such a policy would be viewed
as insane if advocated in any other conflict region in the world. It is
part and parcel of the attempt to criminalise republicans, while
Britain, internationally, tries to promote an entirely false impression
that all prisoners are being treated equally. Segregation must be fought
for so that they are treated more humanely. The international community
must be told, Britain, the occupying power, has a duty of care to all
prisoners, and that their physical safety and psychological well-being
is supposedly guaranteed by transnational and global conventions.
Segregation is merely the minimum measure that the London government
must implement IMMEDIATELY; if lives are not to be lost due to organized
reactionary elements within the confines of HMP Maghaberry.

6. We, on the outside should intensify our efforts in spite of the
diversity of political viewpoints. It is emerging that the PoWs have a
number of specific demands, on which to build campaigns. These are, as
far as we are led to believe:

i) immediate segregation ( must be the top priority )
ii) group representation
iii) a right to elect a spokesperson for each republican group
iv) the provision of a separate wing

Subject: Conway Mill Meeting - Maghaberry POWs
Date: 05 01 02

The following letter was issued by Marian Price two
days ago in response to a meeting hosted by Republican Sinn Féin to
address POW issues inside Maghaberry prison. The meeting, which was to
include a variety of groups both pro- and anti- Treaty, had been
announced by the Andersontown News; a noted publicity organ for the
Stormont provisional movement.

The Irish Freedom Committee ®
www.irishfreedomcommittee.net
************************************************

04 29 02
For your information this is the letter sent to RSF from Marian Price outlining
reasons for our absense from above meeting.

Comrades,
Our organisation had intended to participate in your
meeting, as we believe it is right that like-minded Republican groups at
least discuss common ground especially in the interests of our
prisoners.

However due to speculation in last weeks Andersonstown
News we have decided that to attend may add weight to the various false
claims made in that paper. The provisionally friendly Andersonstown News
have billed your meeting as a “summit of enemies”, we believe it is an
attempt to shift the emphasis away from the prisoner issue which is of
paramount importance at present.

While we appreciate any genuine input into the campaign
for the restoration of Political Status we would be cautious of
approaches made by either the Provisional Movement or the Andersonstown
News who may be more interested in furthering their own agenda. It is
safe to say that any hidden agenda these people may have would not be in
the interests of our prisoners nor indeed our respective organisations.

We would be happy to attend a future meeting at your
convenience free from media speculation and interference.

Following on from your successful picket at Maghaberry
on March 3rd, we take this opportunity to inform you of our intended
Mass Protest at the Gaol on May 5th at 11.30am and would welcome your
attendance.

Marian Price. (Chairperson)
