Subject: I.F.C. Benefit Concert a Huge Success!
Date: 11 30 02

Last weekend’s BENEFIT CONCERT for IRISH PRISONERS in Providence, Rhode
Island was an outstanding success; with enthusiastic support to the
Irish Freedom Committee from attendees and band members alike.
Concertgoers signed scores of Christmas cards for prisoners, and nearly
100 signatures were lodged to a petition for Repatriation of Irish
prisoners in British jails. Members of four bands who performed
collectively signed a poster to be sent to republican prisoners in a
gesture of support. A brief report of the event follows below from the
Providence Rhode Island Chapter of the Irish Freedom Committee.

The Providence Rhode Island Chapter of the Irish Freedom Committee would
like to thank all those who attended the 23 November Christmas drive in
Providence.

Over one hundred strong were in attendance to witness an energetic
lineup consisting of Jay Allen, The Paraplegics, USM, and Mike
McColgan’s Street Dogs.

Our gratitude goes to the enthusiasm of every individual who made this
event a success.

In particular, we would like to offer deep thanks to WALE radio (AM 990
Providence) and FUZZBOX (Fridays 7-9pm), without whose help the interest
raised and the support received may not have been so far-reaching across
the New England political community.

Subject: UPDATE – Aidan Hulme
Date: 11 20 02

The Irish Freedom Committee has received news from prisoners' rights supporters London regarding the recovery of Irish political prisoner Aidan Hulme from his recent surgery.

Many individuals and organizations in Britain and Ireland have worked tirelessly in exposing the plight of Aidan Hulme to human rights advocates around the world, throughout his ordeal. Human rights should not be supported only when politically correct.

It has been noteworthy, throughout this case of obscene medical neglect, that no provisional Sinn Fein Stormont minister has gone on record to
protest this appalling brutality to a young Irish political prisoner. Their callous and well-paid silences speak volumes.

The prisoners' rights spokesperson told us:

"Following surgery on his leg at a London hospital, we are pleased to relay the good news that republican prisoner Aidan Hulme is making a good recovery - and is in good spirits. We regret however that he is not being allowed proper recuperation and was returned to his cell in Belmarsh prison soon after the operation. This is not conducive to he making a full recovery from serious surgery. We are asking that letters, faxes etc be sent to We are asking that letters, phone calls, faxes etc be sent to the Home Secretary Mr Blunkett protesting at this callous treatment.

We know that if it wasn't for supporters and sympathisers in the USA, Ireland and Britain campaigning for him - he would have continued to be neglected. Very many thanks - go raibh maith agaibh!"

DISPATCH FROM IFC POW DEPT.

Subject: Aidan Hulme Released for Surgery
Date: 11 20 02

The Irish Freedom Committee is pleased to finally announce that over one
month since the Hulme family was forced to pay an exorbitant fee to
transport him to and from hospital, and over four months since
Belmarsh’s own doctors ruled that his leg damage was so severe that they
would amputate; Aidan Hulme has finally received the operation that may
save his badly injured leg. Aidan is now recovering at Belmarsh prison.

The Irish Freedom Committee would like to gratefully acknowledge all of
you who so generously gave your help when the Hulme family needed us.
During our long fight on behalf of Aidan Hulme, offers of help poured in
from around the country. Dozens of letters, emails and phone calls were
made weekly on behalf of his critical situation during our campaign, as
so many of you gave your time and your concern to Aidan and his family.
And thanks to the great generosity of many of you, the Irish Freedom
Committee was able to help the Hulme family meet the outrageous amount
demanded by the British government to guarantee Aidan’s medical care.
The Hulme family have expressed their very sincere thanks to all of you.

While the Irish Freedom Committee is relieved that Aidan has finally
received the critical care he has needed for the past six months, we
view this news with mixed feelings. Aidan has not been given
appropriate recovery time, and is back in 23-hour lockdown in a concrete
windowless cell. We urge all of our members and supporters to stay
vigilant as this situation develops.

The right to compassionate and timely medical care is a basic human
right, not a privilege. The British government has acted disgracefully
in Aidan Hulme’s case, and we urge no one to forget it.

Go raibh maith agat to all of you.

Severe Medical Neglect to Irish Prisoner at Belmarsh Prison, London

Thursday November 7, 2002
---------------------------------------

Aidan Hulme (26) was arrested in Belfast in February 2002, and
extradited to Britain to face charges of ‘Conspiracy’ relating to the
arrest of his brother Robert in November 2001. Aidan was not sentenced
and is presently being held on ‘Remand’, guilty of no offense, as a
Category ‘A’ prisoner at Belmarsh Prison, East London. Aiden is being
held under 22-hour lockdown in a windowless cement cell.

Aiden entered the prison on crutches and in pain with severe injuries
from a previous motorcycle accident. He had been receiving regular
medical care in Belfast, including regular physiotherapy and pain
management, prior to his internment at Belmarsh.

Since February Aidan has made repeated complaints relating to pain and
discomfort. In July he was examined by prison doctors, who arranged to
amputate his leg. He was prescribed anti-depressants. In August, a
renowned London orthopedic surgeon visited Aidan and found that
Belmarsh's care is "not comprehensive" and that "(corrective) surgery
should not be delayed". (For details regarding the Medical Report
please see contact information below). The surgeon offered to perform
the operation to save Aidan’s leg, provided his immediate temporary
release could be arranged.

On September 4th, bail was successfully applied for, and granted for
September 20th. A hospital bed was reserved for Aidan for the surgery
and recovery. A contingency condition to Aidan’s bail was imposed by
the court, declaring that Human Rights groups supporting his case not
publicize this pending release. All parties involved, including the
Irish Freedom Committee, honored these terms.

On the evening of the 19th of September, Belmarsh Prison authorities
telephoned Aidan Hulme's mother to inform her they would need 4,000
pounds sterling in cash by morning in order to transport Aidan to and
from the hospital. This outrageous demand was met, with substantial
help from supporters in the US, by the first week in October. Bail was
once more granted, with the stipulation that Aidan’s release be
"immediate".

Today, one month from the date of Belmarsh Prison's receipt of the cash
amount of 4,000 pounds Sterling; and in contempt of a court order to
release him; Aidan remains at Belmarsh Prison.

Despite the substantial cash payment demanded by the British Government
to transport the prisoner to and from the hospital, and the arrangements
made three months ago for Belmarsh doctors to amputate his leg; recent
correspondence from the British Home Office claims that "Belmarsh Prison
are not aware of any complaints Mr. Hulme has raised about his medical
treatment".

Aidan Hulme today remains in great pain, and cannot walk without
assistance. He has no access to braces or special footware to ease his
mobility. He is not being treated properly for severe pain due to the
extensive nerve damage, worsened by months of neglect. Regular
physiotherapy, mandatory in injuries of this nature, has effectively
been denied to him, with only two one-hour sessions allowed over the
past nine months.

report, please contact the Irish Freedom Committee:

*******PLEASE FORWARD THIS E-MAIL WIDELY.************

BRITISH CONSULATE CONTACT INFORMATION - - US

BRITISH CONSULATE CONTACT INFORMATION -- INTERNATIONAL

**********************************************************************

POINTERS FOR CALLING/FAXING YOUR LOCAL BRITISH CONSULATE.

1. Be polite, firm, factual.

2. If you are hesitant to give your full name and phone number, a first
name and e-mail address will allow for a follow-up response.

3. THIS IS A HUMAN RIGHTS ISSUE.

4. Aidan Hulme is an Irish Citizen. He has not been sentenced, he is
being held on Remand, and has therefore not been convicted of any crime.

5. A judge ruled several weeks ago that bail must be granted to Aidan
“immediately” for surgery. Belmarsh Prison stands in contempt of this
ruling.

6. The Hulme family was asked to pay a massive 4,000 pound sterling cash
amount to Belmarsh Prison authorities in order to secure Aidan’s
transportation to and from the hospital. This exceedingly unreasonable
amount was paid in full by the family four weeks ago.

7. Attempts by the British Home Office to state: "Belmarsh Prison are
not aware of any complaints Mr. Hulme has raised about his medical
treatment" are blatant lies. Belmarsh Prison’s own doctors examined
Aidan in July, after complaints of severe pain, and ruled at that time
that they could do no more for him than amputate his leg. Amputation is
an extremely drastic measure and the fact that it was considered as long
ago as July would indicate that Belmarsh Prison is quire aware that
Aidan Hulme needed emergency medical care at least four months ago.

8. In addition to this fact, Aidan Hulme entered the prison in February
on crutches and in severe pain, and in need of regular physiotherapy
that he had been receiving in Belfast for injuries resulting from an
auto accident. Belmarsh Prison would have been aware as long as nine
months ago that Aidan Hulme had serious medical complaints upon
admission to the prison.

9. The British Government cannot possibly benefit from an association
with this barbaric, inhumane, and calculated attempt to deny
court-ordered medical care to an Irish prisoner to the point that his
limb will actually be amputated, as the prison’s own doctors had
suggested back in July.

10. Thank your contact for their prompt attention to this matter and
request a follow-up response.

PLEASE CALL YOUR BRITISH AND IRISH CONSULATES and ask why medical care
has been denied to a severely injured Irish man, despite a judge’s
ruling that he be released for emergency surgery weeks ago. A demand
for a massive cash fee was set at the 11th hour by the British
government to secure Aidan’s release to hospital, which was paid by the
family one month ago. Aiden is in severe pain and cannot walk without
assistance. Doctors ruled four months ago that amputation would be the
result of prolonged neglect.

WHY IS THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT INTENT UPON GUARANTEEING THE UNNECESSARY
AMPUTATION OF A YOUNG IRISH MAN’S LEG?

*** FACT SHEET – TALKING POINTS ***

· This is a HUMAN RIGHTS issue involving an Irish Citizen who is being
held on remand (guilty of no offense) in a British jail (Belmarsh,
London).

· Aidan Hulme (26) is being DENIED the emergency medical care despite a
ruling judge’s decision several weeks ago that he be released
“immediately” for surgery.

· Aidan Hulme had previously been granted bail on September 4, to be
effective September 20. On the evening of September 19 British
Government officials contacted the Hulme family to demand the cash fee
of £4,000.00 Sterling (US $6,250.00) by morning to transport the young
man to and from the hospital. With help from supporters in the US the
family paid this amount in full the first week of October.

· Aidan Hulme has petitioned for medical care since his arrest and
extradition to Britain in February of this year.

· Aidan has very severe injuries from a road accident and has been
denied all forms of medical treatment, including regular physiotherapy
and pain medication, since his transfer to Belmarsh prison in February.

· In July, prison doctors examined Aidan and ruled at that time that
they would amputate his leg.

· A visiting orthopedic surgeon examined Aidan in August and ruled that
amputation could be avoided were Aidan released to his care immediately.
The surgeon has been standing by since then to perform emergency
surgery.

· The visiting physician stated at his August exam that “Clearly the
treatment he is receiving at the moment is not comprehensive. He has
had only two sessions of physiotherapy in his entire time at Belmarsh...
surgery should not be delayed.”

WHY IS THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT INTENT UPON GUARANTEEING THE UNNECESSARY
AMPUTATION OF A YOUNG IRISH MAN’S LEG?
