MARIAN PRICE ARRESTED

At 7 AM on Friday May 13, 2011 the home of Belfast human rights activist Marian Price was raided by several dozen PSNI who spent ten hours removing many items from her home, including computers and phones, printed material, and several items of clothing. Marian was taken to Antrim barracks in North Belfast, and after being being detained 36 hours was handed the dubious and open-ended charge of "promoting terrorism" and transferred to Strand Road barracks in Derry for a court appearance on Monday May 16th.

Marian was granted bail in court, however Secretary of State Owen Patterson has refused to release her; revoking her license stemming from her 1973 conviction on charges of bombing the Old Bailey courthouse in London. This move is widely seen as an attempt to silence and disappear an outspoken and respected human rights activist while the Queen of England visits Ireland.

A large crowd of supporters cheered Marian outside the courthouse as she was led away to Maghaberry Jail, and all-male prison outside Belfast. Irish republican prisoners at Maghaberry are currently on a sustained protest against a policy of forced strip searches which have seriously injured several prisoners and are described by the men as akin to rape.

The Irish Freedom Committee calls for the immediate release of Marian Price.

Charges against Marian Price a pretext for Internment

The Irish Freedom Committee utterly condemns today’s trumped up charges of "promoting terrorism" against veteran Irish republican Marian Price. These blanket charges are without substance of any kind and are nothing less than a sham concocted to re-introduce whole scale internment and erase free speech and free assembly from the streets of Ireland.

The fact that her arrest comes as a human rights crisis takes place at Maghaberry Jail, the like unseen since before the 1981 Hunger Strike in Long Kesh, shows the length the occupying British government will take to erase its dirty record of rampant human rights abuses in Ireland. Marian Price has worked tirelessly for decades to expose and correct human rights abuses in British and Irish jails, and is a humanitarian in every sense of the word.

The real promoters of terrorism in Ireland are the British government, its security forces, and the titular head of the British Army who now heads to Dublin; Queen Elizabeth.
