Ciaran McLaughlin

Maghaberry Prison  Upper Ballinderry Road, Lisburn, Co. Antrim, BT 28 2PT, North of Ireland

Birthdate:  February 10, 1955
Married with six children
Sentence:  18 Years
From Derry

While being held on an 18-year sentence at Maghaberry gaol, occupied Ireland, Irish republican political prisoner Ciaran McLaughlin has endured numerous human rights abuses; including several brutal and life-threatening attacks by loyalist death squads who were housed alongside him at the prison, and the continual deprivation of compassionate leave to visit critically ill and dying members of his immediate family.

Ciaran was sentenced in a Belfast (juryless) Diplock High Court to eighteen years on November 30, 2001.  His conviction was secured on highly dubious evidence.  He has already spent over half his life imprisoned on political charges.  Ciaran was  46 years old at the time of his 2001 sentencing, and by the time he gets out he will have spent 31 years in prison as an Irish Republican political prisoner.

Ciaran was previously released in 1994 after spending 13 years in prison in the H-Blocks with the Provos. He also spent time in Long Kesh when he was 19.  Ciaran has remained a staunch defender of a United Ireland free of British military and administrative control.
